Doctors, scientists, parents, and experts gathered to discuss the latest scientific research and developments in the diagnosis, therapy, and support for children with ASD. One of the key presentations was the APRIL system, which combines social robots, an AI platform, and an evidence-based skill development methodology. The Child Robotics Lab team at NU, led by Anara Sandygulova, demonstrated how it works in practice: after several sessions with a robot, a seven-year-old girl established eye contact with her mother for the first time. She first learned to follow the robot’s gaze and then transferred this skill to real-life communication. Today, APRIL is implemented in 7 centers across Kazakhstan and is used in work with more than 500 children.


The conference also featured EZPECS—a digital version of the PECS system for children with speech difficulties. Directly on a tablet, a child can compose phrases, express desires, and interact with others. This technology helps children be understood and feel more confident.
There was significant discussion regarding the approach to the topic itself. The concept of neurodiversity is being mentioned more frequently—viewing autism as a developmental feature where the focus is on helping the individual live a fulfilling life. At the same time, the reality remains complex. In just one center in Astana, about 400 children with autism undergo rehabilitation annually, along with another 400 with other diagnoses that may mask underlying ASD.
Much has changed in recent years: inclusion support rooms, teaching assistants, and individualized educational programs have emerged. Today, these practices are already active in dozens of cities, and the development of the system continues.
